Francis L. Broderick was born September 13, 1922 in New York, N.Y., the son of Joseph Aloysius (a banker) and Mary (Lyons) Broderick. On June 12, 1950 he married Barbara Baldridge,and together they had four children. In 1943 he graduated from Princeton University. He then served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943-1945. W. E. B. Du Bois was an American sociologist, socialist, historian, civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, author, writer and editor. Educated at Fisk University, he did graduate work at the University of Berlin and Harvard, where he was the first African American to earn a doctorate.
